Currently in 8 cities across the country, we are positioning ourselves for future growth and have an exciting opportunity for a strategic business leader to join the National team as a Director of Accounting Operations.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Accounting Operations will drive the organization's financial operations and improve its financial performance, reporting, analysis, and forecasting. This position will be responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly accounting tasks and activities associated with both Payroll and Accounts Payable. The Director of Accounting Operations will make recommendations to management for the development and implementation of accounting practices and procedures to ensure proper internal controls and accurate & timely financial and grant recordkeeping and reporting. This position must meet tight deadlines and perform a multitude of accounting activities, including detailed payroll oversight, reconciliations and financial reporting. While the role will reside within Genesys Works' Finance Team, the position requires working closely with departments across the organization to support new and ongoing organizational initiatives.

Working in collaboration with other leaders and colleagues, the Director of Accounting Operations will be responsible for the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day activities of the accounts payable and payroll personnel, acting as backup for the Controller and Team Managers, as well as overseeing grant accounting.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all accounting and financial reporting for the entire Genesys Works network by applying a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and lead payroll and payables personnel, ensuring the organization's ability to accomplish its mission. Identify goals and areas of growth for both individuals and department(s), implement performance factors, continually monitor progress, provide ongoing feedback and guidance, and appraise results. Initiate employment and release of such personnel in consultation with the executive team, when appropriate.
  • Manage the ongoing cash forecasting processes.
  • Respond to inquiries from the staff regarding financial budgets, deposits, disbursement, and special/grant reporting requests.
  • Reconcile all assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts on a monthly/quarterly basis as indicated by the monthly closing schedule.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting and financial reporting requirements of federal, state, and other governing bodies.
  • Assist in coordinating and overseeing the external financial, and 403(b) audit engagements.
  • Manage the preparation of IRS Forms 990 and 5500.
  • Prepare financial data for funding requests.
  • Coordinate and prepare forms for annual insurance renewals.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has proven leadership skills in the nonprofit sector (preferred but not required), blending strong strategy, team management, and development experience.

Specifically, this individual will have the following experience and capabilities:

  • You have experience in a multi-business unit environment, an accounting degree with nonprofit executive experience, 10+ years’ experience in accounting operations, accounting procedures and supervision, and can accomplish financial tasks independently.
  • You are a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with a thorough understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, account code structures, general ledgers, journal entries, and financial statements.
  • You have demonstrated success in written and verbal communication, organizational skills, the ability to train others, and human relation/problem-solving skills.
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Excel and are comfortable with Advanced Microsoft Excel skills like pivot tables, VLOOKUP, INDEX|MATCH, and charting.
  • You have experience or a high level of comfort with tools like Sage Intacct, Salesforce, and Adaptive Insights.
  • You are detail-oriented, and energized by solving problems and sparking solutions.
  • You know how to match vision with execution; you have experience thinking strategically as well as demonstrated success executing with strong attention to detail.
  • You can work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external entities to maximize performance and effectiveness while instilling a strong culture of teamwork.
  • You believe that all people can reach their full potential and are passionate about helping them get there.
  • You gauge your success in measurable impact and know how to ruthlessly prioritize.
